Trivia

  • The previous game – the Scottish Cup 3rd Round tie against Clydebank – had been the first Sunday game. And following evalustion of the response the SFA decided that Sunday football would stay in place for the duration of the state of emergency. Clubs would now be offered the option of playing on the Saturday or the Sunday for the duration.
  • Steve Murray, who had missed the Scottish Cup tie with a stomach upset returned to the first team with Vic Davidson and Tommy Callaghan missing out.
  • Celtic announce that George Connelly's transfer request has been accepted. He is valued at £200,000.
  • They could have done with him at Fir Park where Celtic blow a two goal lead.
  • It's not a bad day entirely as Arbroath shock Rangers by winning 3-2 at Ibrox.
  • Hibernian break the Scottish record transfer fee paying £120,000 to bring Joe Harper from Everton back to Scotland.

Review

With 23 minutes left no one could have forecast Celtic's collapse.
The defence looked unsure all game although Hunter and McCluskey fought manfully.

Motherwell fought hard and tenaciously even through the first half when Celtic went 1-0 up with a goal from Murray after being set up by Kenny Dalglish. Bobby Lennox put them further ahead early in the second half with a typical Lennox break.
The game turned at 2-1 when Deans' headed goal was disallowed by the referee although the linesman did not flag. Dalglish was booked for his vehement protests.
That kicked Motherwell into action and Martin followed four minutes later by Graham pulled them back level. That set up a tense and pulsating finish with Celtic grimly defending. But on 82 minutes Goldthorpe scored and Celtic missed out on the points.
