- Connaghan had a slight back strain and Murray was recovering from a cold but they both recovered to play. Also back in was Harry Hood recovered from his ankle knock. Dixie Deans kept his place from the League Cup game in midweek.
- Celtic play in all yellow strip.
- Ayr Utd were bottom of the Division at this point and manager Ally MacLeod had laid down the line that if his players did not give 100% then they could look elsewhere.
- Celtic had bid £80,000 plus two players for Partick Thistle's Ronnie Glavin but had their bid turned down.
- On the previous night Celtic defeated Ayr Utd 2-1 in a Reserve League match at Somerset Park. The Celtic team was Barclay, Gourlay, Quinn, Casey, MacDonald, Thomson, Ritchie, Davidson, Bone, Lynch, Murphy. Subs McLaughlin and Mulholland. The Celtic scorers were Mulholland and Lynch.
Review
Celtic play well and could have scored more goals with more careful finishing.
A hearty welcome back for Dixie Deans who opened the scoring and played well. He also laid on the second goal for Paul Wilson.
Somner pulled one back for Ayr but Dalglish made it 3-1 at half time.
Wilson scored his second at the start of the second half to put Celtic 4-1 up and Harry Hood added number 5, quickly replied with a goal from Dickson to make it 5-2.
Joe Fillipi nipped another goal back for Ayr just before the end.
Dalglish was given a standing ovation when he was substituted in the second half in appreciation of another brilliant display.
At the end of the month the League table looked like this. New club in the League Meadowbank Thistle, the old Ferranti works team, were bottom of the Second Division with 0 points having lost all seven of their games so far. Hibernian had lost top spot this weekend when they lost to St Johnstone and Rangers won resoundingly against Kilmarnock.
