Trivia

  • Early in the week the Reserves played Clyde with Deans, Hood and Hunter all getting a run out.
  • McGrain and Dalglish were in the Scottish team to face Sweden in Gothenburg. Pat McCluskey was a reserve for the U23 side. The main team drew 1-1 and the U23's won 2-1.
  • Tommy Burns makes his debut as a sub for Paul Wilson. Andy Ritchie was also on the bench as Jock Stein with the League over and done gave some of the youngsters a taste of first team football. The starting line up was unchanged from the one against Dunfermiline in the previous game.
  • The big move this season was for the lower teams in League One. The League structure would change the following season with the top 10 teams going into a premier League. The push was on to make it into that top 10. Celtic were clearly not involved in this but for the likes of Partick Thistle, St Johnstone, Motherwell, Ayr, Kilmarnock and Airdrie the last few games of the season were crucial.
  • In the match programme Jock Stein thanked the fans for their continuing support through a tough season.
  • In the Reserve League Celtic drew 1 -1 with Dundee at Dens Park. The Celtic team was Hunter, Hannah, Brogan, McLaughlin, Welsh, Newman, Johnstone, Casey, Deans, Callaghan and Hood Subs Junior and McCluskey. The Celtic scorer was Hood.

Outside of football, the 'Social Contract' was in play, a tacit agreement between the Labour government and the Unions to restrict pay demands whilst the government attempted to control inflation and reduce the cost of living and get to grips with a deficit in government spending in the face of rising unemployment.

Review

Latchford makes a howler at the end as he misjudges Hoggan's swinging cross and allows the ball to to go over him into the net.
The early part of the game was entertaining end-to-end football with both sides showing skill. With Murray and Dalglish in midfield, wings of Wilson and Lennox and Glavin up front and a defense of McGrain, McNeill, MacDonald and Lynch with McCluskey sweeping. Celtic had gone behind on the half hour when a shot from Robinson was deflected off of a defender and into the net. Celtic had to wait till the second half to draw level with a Ronnie Glavin header. And then Celtic were undone by Latchford's misjudgement in the final minute of the game. Celtic dropped to third in the League.

On Burns' debut the papers say: '…he could be well satisfied with his performance. He reads the game well, uses the ball intelligently and obviously a boy to keep an eye on'.
