- This was the last League game of the season. There was the look of the 'old guard' about this team selection. There was clearly a thought towards the Cup Final. Back in came Johnstone, Deans and Callaghan and out dropped Wilson, McCluskey and Lennox dropping to the bench to join Harry Hood.
- Jimmy Johnstone's last ever competitive game for Celtic. He was replaced by Harry Hood.
- Saints' win gives them a place in the inaugural Premier League. The hunt was on for points to make it into the top 10 in the League to be in the Premier League the following season.
- Lambie missed a penalty in 5 minutes after Roddie MacDonald fouled O'Rourke in the area.
- McGrain and Dalglish are named in the Scotland squad for the home internationals. McCluskey is named in under 23 squad to face Rumania.
Review
It could have been a heavier defeat for Celtic had Lambie not missed an early penalty for Saints. Celtic were without spark and listless throughout.
Celtic went in front after this narrow mistake when Ronnie Glavin played a one-two with Deans and buried the return. But St Johnstone levelled the score just before half time.
The second half saw a spirited St Johnstone attack but it was even till St Johnstone got a second penalty when Latchford pulled the striker down and Gordon Smith made no mistake.
Celtic players have their minds on next week's SCF against Airdrie at Hampden.
