Trivia

  • The opener to the League Cup and the first real game of the season. This year the dreaded offside rule change had been dropped and the normal rule applied.
  • The news finally broke of Kenny Dalglish asking for a transfer with the issue seemingly being down to money. He made it clear that he did not want to leave Celtic but as yet he had refused to sign a new contract and was playing on the option clause of his old one.
  • Stevie Murray was still out with a troublesome foot injury. He had an operation on his foot to attempt to clear a problem with an old injury and recovery was proving to be a drawn out affair. Dixie Deans was suspended for the first two weeks of the season.
  • Edvaldsson started the game as a full Celtic player having agreed terms and returned briefly to Denmark to seal the paperwork at that end. Youngster Alan McLean was also included in the squad for the game.
  • Jock Stein had by now been released from hospital and was recovering at home. He wrote in the Match Programme how frustrated he felt but that his return was in the hands of the medical staff.
  • Pitch invasion by Celtic fans put down to 'summer madness' on very hot day.
  • Highlights shown at night on Sportscene,
  • On the same day Celtic lost 4-1 to Aberdeen in a Reserve League Cup match at Pittodrie. The Celtic team was Hunter, Gourlay, Baillie, Aitken, Welsh, Connelly, Casey, Hannah, G McCluskey, Burns, Little. Subs Innes and McGrane. The Celtic scorer was Casey.

Review

Jock Stein is still hospitalised and Celtic announce Sean Fallon will be caretaker manager until the end of the esason when Stein will hopefully be well enough to return.
The hot weather hold at Parkhead and another big crowd turns up to enjoy the sunny weather.
Celtic play a 4-3-3 formation.
Dalglish scores the winner with an exquisite finish after he worked his way clear in the area to face Clark to give Celts a much needed and deserved win.

Edvaldsson continues to impress in midfield and is now cult figure with the fans already as 'Big Shuggie.'

Sean Fallon is glad to get his first competitive game over with a victory.

Celtic are now a team in transition with no more McNeill, Brogan, Johnstone, Murray or Connelly. The new faces, Glavin, Latchford, MacDonald, Lynch and Edvaldsson continue to impress.
