Trivia
- An unchanged team from the won that defeated Aberdeen at the weekend. Roddy MacDonald had aggravated his early season knee twist but intensive treatment saw him fit for this game. Danny McGrain had also had three stitches in a head wound after the Saturday game.
- After talk with the Celtic big wigs it looked like Kenny Dalglish would stay – though it was by no means certain. Chairman Desmond White led the press to believe that certain undertakings had been made to Dalglish and that he had agreed to remain, though the new contract remained unsigned. One of those undertakings was likely to have been the captaincy for the season.
- Hearts had two ex-Celts in Steve Hancock and Bobby Prentice.
- Pat McCluskey missed a penalty.
Review
This game was a contrast of two goalkeepers.
Latchford blundered badly by allowing a Brown shot from 25 yards to squirm away and allowed ex Celt Stevie Hancock a tap in.
Minutes later Celtic were awarded a penalty which McCluskey took only for Cruickshank to make a brilliant save on 27 minutes.
Celtic had started well but the loss of the goal and the missed penalty represented a big setback.
Cruikshank then made a superb save to deny Kenny Dalglish towards the end of the first half.
Celtic tried hard to get back in the game but Hearts looked more likely to score with McGrain clearing off the line at the end.
