Trivia
- Birmingham City Centenary match.
- Celtic headed down by train on the day of the game and were based in Solihull.
- Sean Fallon's to-ing-and-fro-ing to Ireland each weekend on 'business' again showed fruit with the trial of striker Hilary Carlyle of Finn Harps. He proves to be anonymous despite having a great scoring record with the Harps.
Review
Hilary Carlyle played for 45 minutes on trial from Finn Harps but failed to impress. Pat McCluskey missed a penalty in 76 minutes when goalkeeper Steve Smith saved his effort.
There were high tensions before and after the game as anti Irish feelings ran high in Birmingham after the recent Birmingham pub bomb by militant Irish Republicans which had killed many people. Police asked Celtic fans to refrain from waving Irish flags in view of the recent events and everything passed off peacefully.
Peter Withe scored the winning goal for Birmingham. In 1982 he scored the winning goal for Aston Villa in the European Cup final against Bayern Munich.
