Trivia

  • Celtic had been due to face Ayr Utd on the Saturday 6th and Rangers on the 13th before but the matches were postponed with the 'flu bug hitting all teams. Celtic's game previous to this had been the home leg and they had been without a game for two weeks other than a practise match against the Reserves.
  • This was Celtic's first and last visit to the old East Germany and they were based in the city of Karl Marx Stadt.
  • Celtic have injury/flu crisis with Lynch, Ritchie, George McCluskey, Deans and Lennox all missing, Latchford, McGrain, Dalglish Wilson, Casey and Glavin just recovered
  • Because of flu Celtic could only name four subs.
  • John Doyle signed from Ayr United at Glasgow airport for £90,000 and travelled with the team although he could not play.
  • Edvaldsson wears number 9 shirt but plays in defence.
  • Celtic had to complete documents to 'adopt' 17 year old defender Roy Aitken to allow him entry into East Germany.
  • STV transmit the game back live to Scotland with an early afternoon 2pm kick off, despite the protests of managers and jobsworths up and down the country saying there would be a spate of grannies funerals, four hour 'flu and dental appointments
  • The Scottish League lost 1-0 at Hampden to the English League later on this day.
  • Sachsenring lost 5-0 to Anderlecht on aggregate in the semi finals.

Outside of football, Harold Wilson caught the country out and resigned as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party.

Review

Sean Fallon played Roddy MacDonald as an emergency striker due to an injury crisis.

Celtic suffered a blow when Blank scored after only three minutes with a fine shot over Latchford from 20 yards after outpacing McCluskey.

Celtic found their feet and had almost all the play. Before half time there was a flurry of chances when Hood shot over, MacDonald deflected a Dalglish back heel past the post and then Hood again fired wide.

In 57 minutes Celtic missed their best chance. A powerful Glavin shot was parried by Croy and MacDonald lost his balance with goal gaping.

In 86 minutes there was controversy when MacDonald headed in a Hood corner but the referee blew for an infringement and the last chance was gone.

Celtic could argue that they were unlucky over both legs. A sad end to St Patrick's day 1976.
