Trivia
- Celtic announce that George Connelly was officially freed by the club. He had been at Falkirk but Celtic held his registration. Connelly had just walked out of Falkirk after being subbed in a game against Clydebank.
- After this match Ayr, under manager Alex Stuart head south for their Anglo Scottish Cup tie with Nottingham Forrest.
- Ayr United supporters travelling south might not get a warm welcome as English and Scottish football is still reeling from the events last week when Rangers’ “friendly” at Villa Park was prematurely ended in scenes that have caused a Home Office inquiry. After that game Glasgow Herald sports correspondent Ian Archer wrote Rangers were “a permanent embarrassment and an occasional disgrace”.
- In a high powered announcement during the week no doubt timed to try to offset the fallout from the rioting Rangers fans, the ‘light blues’ announced that they would now sign catholics. Thge admission and its implication that they had deliberately not signed catholics was by and large overlooked in the attempt to show the club in a good light.
Review
Ayr made it difficult for 70 minutes but after Glavin’s fine effort there was only to be one winner. Pat Stanton is now showing all his experience in defence and Celtic look a far better team with him at the back. His experience gave confidsence to MacDonald and allowed Lynch and McGrain to get forward.
The team was looking stronger but still missing chances in front of goal that should have been buried.
