• Celtic prepared for the League Cup final at Troon with a squad of 16 players.
• Celtic's thirteenth consecutive appearance in the League Cup final.Celtic were 5/4 favourites to win going into the game.
• In came Tommy Burns instead of Callaghan who had left for Clydebank. Edvaldsson was back in for Stanton who was cup-tied. Aberdeen were second in the League at this point and showing good form having won their last four league games.
• The Celtic fans were unusually placed this time at what was (and is) considered the Rangers end of Hampden.
• Celtic badly miss the cup tied pair of Pat Stanton and Joe Craig.
• Davie Robb had a premonition the night before the game that he would score the winning goal.
• On the previous night Celtic defeated Ayr Utd 2-1 in a Reserve League match at Celtic Park. The Celtic team was Baines, Gourlay, McGrane, Hannah, Casey, Innes, Mackie, G. McCluskey, Henderson, McLaughlin, J. McCluskey Subs Temperley and Fairlie. Brian McLaughlin scored both Celtic goals.

Review

Celtic dominated this game and were most unlucky to lose on a horrid day of wet and windy weather.
Playing some fine football Celtic cut through the Dons' defence time after time and only good goalkeeping from Bobby Clark and poor finishing kept them from winning. Wilson had several bad misses and Lennox and Glavin also missed decent chances.
Dalglish scored from the spot after being pulled down in the area by Scot. Jarvie equalised with a header. And it stodd at 1-1 right up to the 90 minutes. Two minutes into extra time

Celtic dominated the second half and both periods of extra time but could not deliver the killer blow to kill the Dons' hopes.

McGrain, Lynch and Aitken were booked along with harper of Aberdeen.

Aberdeen scored their winning goal against the run of play and colourful manager Ally MacLeod celebrated wildly at the end with his jubilant players.
