Review
Bobby Robson's splendid Ipswich side provide an entertaining opposition for the 27,000 crowd. Ipswich were currently at the top of the English League having recently beaten West Brom 7-0 at Portman Road. New striker, £240,000 signing Paul Mariner, a fine Plymouth Argyle boy, leads their attack.
Celtic were missing McGrain, Dalglish and Burns (under 21) who were away with Scotland on international duty for the midweek world cup tie against Wales at Hampden. With a weekend break because the Scottish League have postponed the fixtures, Jock Stein arranged this attractive match played unusually on a cold November Sunday afternoon.
Celtic played with adventure against Ipswich's more patient and organised style. Celtic took the lead in 15 minutes when Andy Lynch sent over a fine cross from the left for the in form Joe Craig to leap and send a fine header into the net.
Ipswich equalised with a similar goal when Clive Woods ran down the left wing before crossing for Trevor Whymark to score with a header. They took the lead before half time when Burley set up Mariner to score from six yards.
Roy Baines had an impressive first game in the Celtic goal but without their main men Dalglish and McGrain Celtic were unable to conjur up an equaliser in the second half.
