• Roy Aitken was on international duty with Scotland U21's in Switzerland (he found he'd forgotten his passport at the airport). Pat McCluskey came in for him. Roddy MacDonald was also fit after his long recovery and played for the Reserves the same night against Ayr Utd Reserves.
• In the week after this game Jock Stein blasted the Scottish League for making them play this game on the Wednesday night when it clashed with the U21 Scotland game and he found himself in controversy for not releasing Tommy Burns (see below). Celtic wanted game played on 28th March but SFL refused.
• Bobby Lennox was back playing with the Reserves again and played against Ayr Utd scoring the second goal.
• Johnny Gibson's only full appearance for Celtic.
• This was Pat McCluskey's last game for Celtic.
• Roy Aitken plays for Scotland under 21's 2-0 defeat in Switzerland. Celtic protest to SFA who allow Tommy Burns to stay and play as a compromise. Stein said to be livid at this. Burns plays in unusual position of left back position – which he had been tried in before with Andy Lynch out.
• Pat Stanton makes an emotional first return to Easter Road as a Celtic player.
• This game was postponed from 4 December 1976.
