Trivia

  • Celtic's first game against Chelsea since 1964.
  • Alfie Conn and Pat Stanton were both out injured following the League opener against Dundee Utd. Conn would be out for over 2 months after cartilage surgery.
  • Chelsea arrived in Glasgow on the morning before the game.

Review

Celtic fans were disappointed that ex Celt David Hay was injured and could not play. Hay had had eye surgery to reattach a retina during the summer. Celtic, still reeling from Dalglish's departure, cannot finish off the newly promoted London division side despite second half pressure, a pattern that would emerge throughout the next eight months.

Celtic took advantage of the Friendly to experiment. In came Casey as a sweeper for Stanton and Edvaldsson and Glavin swapped positions.Celtic were ahead twice and pegged back each time by a competent Chelsea side. Burns, Craig and Edvaldsson all had good attempts to find the winner

Youngsters Ray Wilkins and Tommy Burns impress in midfield.
Andy Lynch went off with a recurrence of the groin strain that had seen him miss all the Far East tour games.
