Review
Celtic suffered one of their heaviest defeats in Jock Stein's reign as manager as Hibs grabbed the initiative in the fight for a UEFA cup place.
Young junior Mike Conroy was thrown into the deep end on his debut and did well, even managing to score Celtic's only goal with a brave header. He played in central midfield between Aitken and Dowie with Edvaldsson and MacDonald back in central defense..
Hibs started well and finished strongly, however the game was held up in the second half when several hundred Celtic fans invaded the field of play and bottles and cans were thrown. The cue for the invasion was an incident between the Hibs goalkeeper and Tom McAdam when the call for a penalty was waived away by referee Valentine. It took the intervention of Jock Stein to clear them from the pitch and there were 30 arrests.
The invasion brought chairman Desmond White out into the papers with calls for the government to implement to recent McElhone report on football hooliganism.
