1978-04-30: Hibernian 2-1 Celtic, Pat Stanton Testimonial

Trivia

Stanton testimonial 1978

Review

Hibs beat Celtic 2-1 in front of 30,000 fans at Easter Road with a goal by guest Joe Jordan and a Stanton penalty. Celtic’s only reply was a John Lambie own goal. Note that Ralph Callachan of Newcastle United and Eamonn Bannon of Hearts guested for Celtic and Willie Wallace and Tommy Gemmell guested for Hibernian. The game was played in ‘numbing cold’ and an estimated 12,000 Celtic fans travelled through to bolster the attendance for a deserving cause.

Pat Stanton had a short career with Celtic and his greatest days was with Hibs. However he still applied himself well and was well respected as a player. Stanton was a player the purists loved to see.

Nine of the fourteen Celts listed had played 24 hours previously in the 3-1 league defeat at Love Street against St.Mirren.

According to one story, Tommy Gemmell had a bit of fun at the match: He went up to the Celtic support who were all singing his name. Their end were lovin him conducting the singing. Gemmell then takes off his Celtc top to reveal a Hibs one underneath! He turn his back on the Celtic Support and then starts conducting the Hibs support. Sure it created some noise!
