- Heavy snow hit Scotland from immediately before New Year and through January. Not only were grounds affected but many clubs had to deal with flooding due to burst pipes. Clubs found it hard to find training facilitites to keep players fit and some resorted to going abroad. Hibs took their players to Israel at one point. Aberdeen also went to Portugal.
- Billy McNeill made an emotional return to the resort of Estoril where the Lions had stayed prior to the 1967 Lisbon final.
- Estoril were managed by former Benfica player Torres.
- The team also made a nostalgic visit to the Estadio Nacional for the occasion.
- This game was played to give Celtic a run out due to the Arctic weather back in the UK. They flew back on the afternoon of the 17th with news that there might be a thaw setting in.
- Ronnie Glavin did not travel. He was up in front of Hamilton Sheriff Court on a charge of arson for setting fire to his East Kilbride sports shop. The case carried on for 5 days with an eventual verdict of 'Not Proven'.
