- Celtic's first competitive game of 1979.The game had been due to take place on the Saturday 27th but was called off due to a blizzard. The snow melted and the pitch flooded but through hard work the game went ahead on the Wednesday.
- George McCluskey's hat trick settles the nerves after Montrose lead 1-0 at half time.
- Crowd of only 3,060 turn up in sub zero temperatures.
- Many Celtic buses in west of Scotland prevented from travelling by weather warnings.
- Celtic were linked with a deal to bring Motherwell defender Gregor Stevens to Celtic Park. Billy McNeill denied any involvement.
- The Reserves also managed a game the day before at Celtic Park beating Partrick Thistle Reserves 2-0 with golas from Lumsden and Junior. The full team was Bonner, Newman, Russell, Lumsden, Young, Duffy, Mackie, Casey, Junior, Weir, Halpin. Subs: Reid, Ward.
Review
Montrose put up a brave fight in dreadful conditions before a late burst gives Celtic the win.
1-0 down at half time Celtic turned it up in the second half and could have won by more. McCluskey scored a great hat trick but McGrain and MacLeod were the driving force of the team.
