- With the loss at the weekend to Hibernian down to two defensive blunders – one directly attributable to Latchford – Billy McNeill was set to make changes. He didn't name the team till shortly before kick off.
- Peter Latchford paid for his blunder and Pat Bonner makes his second appearance as Celtic goalkeeper. With Andy Lynch still out injured, Joe Filippi was dropped with a fit again Murdo MacLeod coming back in and Ronnie Glavin was dropped in favour of restoring Bobby Lennox to the team. Davie Provan was carrying a rib injury and centre half Roddie MacDonald had still not recovered from his ankle injury – in fact the news was bad and he might not play again this season with the diagnosis of a hairline ankle fracture.
- Young reserve player John Weir is on the Celtic bench with George McCluskey.
- At this point Motherwell were pretty much relegation certainties and rock bottom of the League. For them Irvine and Carberry had just been signed from Alloa. Motherwell were drastically cutting costs, getting rid of expensive players and signing cheaper ones. Willie Pettigrew had of course been linked to a £100,000 transfer to Celtic.
Review
Danny McGrain is rapidly recapturing his old form and scored a rare goal into the bargain.
Celtic responded well to Clinging's goal and were 3-1 up at half time. When Lennox scored from the spot to make it 4-2 it looked all over but 'Well fought back and the referee appeared to award a goal when Bonner fumbled on the line, but the ref eventually gave a drop ball and Larnach scored to make it 4-3 and a few edgy minutes before full time.
