Review
This match was played at Ibrox Park as Love Street was in the process of reconstruction. Ibrox itself was in a state of upheaval as the Copland Road stand was almost complete and that summer the Broomloan stand would begin construction. For this reason this was to be the last time that Celtic supporters would stand in their traditional 'Celtic end' on the old open Ibrox terracing before it was destroyed. This game was a postponed fixture from December and is another reason for the Ibrox venue.
Despite this being a home match for Saints Celtic had around 20,000 fans in the ground who were hoping that Celtic could continue their march towards the title. Celtic fans packed the old terracing and the Centenary stand with Saints fans in the main stand and enclosure areas.
Celtic appeared nervous and the game was scrappy on a fiery pitch. Despite a poor first half Celtic increased the pressure as the game wore on and it was no surprise when McCluskey headed in the first from a Provan corner. Ten minutes from time Lennox scored an identical header again from a Provan cross and Celtic had won, much to the delight of the green and white mass behind the Saints' goal.
This game was played on a Friday evening at the request of the police as Rangers and Hibernian were contesting the Scottish cup at Hampden the next day.
It was going to be tight!!
