- All ticket crowd of 18,000 packs into Cappielow for this top-of-the-table clash. Morton were sitting 3 points behind Celtic in second place. Morton were unbesten at home and Celtic had yet to lose a League game. Morton's association with Celtic was continued with both Manager Benny Rooney and Assistant Manager Mike Jackson being ex-Celtic players , though Rooney never played a competitive match and made his name as a player after he had left the club. He would go on to rejoin Celtic in a youth role at a later date.

Review
In 24 minutes Holmes handled in the area and Murdo MacLeod smashed the penalty high over the bar.
Morton's goal was an excellent move from a free kick which ended with Thomson scoring.
Celtic tried to the end but it was not to be. Ex-Celt Roy Baines in the Morton goal had a great game to keep the Celts goal-less.
