Trivia
- Kilmarnock had just turned down a £200,000 bid for their centre back Derrick McDicken from West Ham.
- With no injury worries Billy McNeill played the same team that had turned out in the draw against St Mirren in midweek with McGarvey starting his second game. Killie were also unchanged and had the best home record in the League.
- Celtic have now drawn 8 of their last 16 games.
- In the Reserve League on the same day Celtic defeated Kilmarnock 2-1 at Celtic Park. The Celtic team was Bonner, Weir, Reid, McStay, Young, Burns, Davidson, Edvaldsson, Nicholas, Conroy, Halpin Subs Crainie and Douglas. The Celtic scorers were Nicholas and Reid.
Review
Killie scored in the first minute after a mix up in the Celtic defence and it looked like one of those days until the 86th minute when sub Bobby Lennox scored with a blistering shot.
New signing Frank McGarvey looked off the pace but in the last minute he sent in a great shot which McCulloch touched away brilliantly.
The last 20 minutes was a total siege around the Killie goal goal but Celtic had a scare in 72 minutes when Killie sub Doherty hit the post.
