Review

Iain Jardine's 30 yard shot for the winner is good enough to win any game.

Memories

I was at this game. Before the kick-off I was slightly surprised that the Jags fans around me were supremely confident of success. They weren't basing this prediction on recent results because Celtic had not only beaten Thistle in all four league games but had also knocked the Maryhill Magyars out of the League Cup. No, through a unique brand of Firhill logic. their optimism was based entirely on the fact that Thistle tended to win trophies only in years ending in a one!

Their solitary Scottish Cup win happened in 1921, their last Glasgow Cup win had been in 1961 and of course they were still celebrating their sensational League Cup success of 1971. Alan Rough and Jackie Campbell had played in that Hampden final and both of them played a crucial part in the Thistle line-up ten years later.

It wasn't a bad game and there was enough of a crowd to give the game a respectable sense of occasion. Celtic started strongly and always looked far more likely to score. Splendid goalkeeping and resolute defending from the home team seemed only to be delaying the inevitable. But once Ian Jardine had given Partick the lead, there was a growing feeling that, in spite of incessant Celtic pressure., it was going to be Thistle's night. The Jags contested every challenge as if they were playing in a European Cup final while Celtic, although making some sort of an effort, nevertheless looked like a team that was just taking care of a few last chores after having clinched the League Championship a week and a half before. The immoveable object stood firm as the irresistible force eventually wheezed to a standstill.
And so it was that when the final whistle blew, the Scottish champions had to stand back and watch the undeniably grand old trophy being handed over to, as it were, Glasgow's finest in accordance with the unbreakable laws of esoteric numerology and astrological divination.
