Review
A large crowd turned out at Fir Park to witness Celtic demolish Motherwell. The Lanarkshire club were in the headlines after the high profile capture of manager Jock Wallace from Leicester City and their side contained three ex Celts in Edvaldsson, Conn and O'Hara.
Celtic were still smarting from atheir 2-2 home draw at home against Johann Cruyff's Ajax from the previous Wednesday. Tommy Burns was injured and manager McNeill pushed Roy Aitken into midfield with devastating effect.
Charlie Nicholas, who had recently returned from injury with a broken leg, showed he was back to top form with a fantastic hat trick. The third one was a spectacular effort after he beat three defenders on a fine run and fired a shot into the top corner. However it was Aitken who rounded things off with two splendid individual goals from midfield when he burst energetically through the 'Well defence on each occasion and scored both times with excellent finishes.
Celtic turned the screw in the second half and could have had double figures, the only blot being McGarvey receiving a bad injury after bravely scoring in 32 minutes.
After the match, Motherwell manager, Jock Wallace, could only comment, "We were slaughtered."
