On Saturday, it was off to Fir Park and Celtic came out winners by three goals to nil.
This was the first visit to Fir Park for Davie Hay, Frank Connor and Brian McClair as Celts since they each left the books of Motherwell FC. On the park McClair did his share to help Celtic win. The manager and his assistant, too, found reason to be pleased with the match.
Celtic took the lead after only five minutes through McGarvey then scored twice inside the last fifteen minutes through Paul McStay and Tommy Burns to finish off the home side. During the match, Frank McGarvey limped off the field but he was fit to join the Scotland squad.

Davie Hay and his assistant, Frank Connor, were making their first visits to Fir Park in charge of Celtic. Their first visit to their former club. So, too, was Brian McClair who was promoted from the bench to start the match.
By the end of the afternoon, any thoughts of a welcome for them that the Motherwell fans had, had totally disappeared. Celtic had set about taking full points in this match from the moment the ball was first kicked.
After five minutes of continuous pressure, McGarvey put Celtic in front. Joe Wark attempted a pass back onlt to see the ball picked up by Paul McStay who sent it over to McClair. He in turn sent it to McGarvey to see him shoot Celtic ahead.
From here on it was always going to be Celtic who collected the points although it took another 71 minutes for the second goal to come.
In the 54th minute Melrose replaced a limping Frank McGarvey and collected a booking before he’d even touched the ball. He had apparently come on to the park without being given permission by the referee.
For his goal, McStay collected a pass from MacLeod, played a one-two with Burns before shooting low past the keeper with his left foot.
Tommy Burns was the scorer of the third goal. Strong running by McClair gave the midfielder the opening he needed to shoot past a helpless keeper with six minutes of play left.
