Match Report
Danish football had taken a tremendous boost from the national side’s victory over England a week earlier and it was obvious from the way the Aarhus fans prepared for the match that they really fancied their team’s chances. Celtic held a 1-0 lead from the first Leg and when they took the field their new light green change strip made them look like a continental side. By the end of the match they looked like a top-class European side. Not for what they wore, but for how they had played.

The contribution of one man will be remembered more than most, but this was a night when every Celtic player did himself proud. Frank McGarvey had had stitches removed from his thigh injury then played, made the first goal and scored the second as well as giving his customary work rate for the 83 minutes he was on the park.

A slight 1-0 lead from the first leg at home is not an ideal start in a European tie but the Celtic players set about the game in such a way that the home side were forced to defend and at times it might have been hard to figure out which team was on their home territory.

By half time Celtic had scored twice and the home fans were just relaxing and enjoying the show by their Scottish visitors. It had taken only 21 minutes for MacLeod to score from the edge of the box after a move that saw Tommy Burns and Frank McGarvey at their very best. Six minutes later McGarvey made it 2-0 when he collected a ball from McGrain, played a one-two with Melrose and shot on the move past the keeper and into the net.

By now Celtic were on all-out attack with MacLeod in the midfield playing well and working in the kind of way that seems to rub off on players around him. The team were performing well – as a team
.
Two minutes after the restart, Aitken made it 3-0. A Burns cross had been missed by MacLeod and when Aitken got to the ball he saw his powerful shot hit the post and bounce into the goal from the back of the diving Danish keeper.

Willy Scheepers scored for Aarhus in the 76th minute after a spell when they’d started to push forward more and looked eager to score. Five minutes later Provan restored Celtic’s three goal advantage when he drove the ball past the defence into the net from just inside the box.

Celtic used two substitutes during the match, McClair replaced a limping Melrose in the 66th minute, and Halpin replaced McGarvey who had surely done enough, in the 83rd minute.

Personal taste.

These three paragraphs were the ending to Chick Young’s match report from Aarhus.
Each man to his own taste, indeed, but it seems that the Celtic support disagrees with Chick Young (surprise, surprise).
Since the strip was first seen on Wednesday evening and showed up so well on television, the Celtic Shop has had a tremendous number of orders for the strip.
No strip will ever be more popular than the hoops, but it looks as though the new change strip will become the most popular second choice Celtic have ever had.
