Match Report
A very disappointing crowd turned out for this match and at the end of the 90 minutes they left for home a very disappointed crowd.
As expected, Celtic went on all-out attack, but the expected goals just didn’t come. It could have been the fact that McCulloch in the Kilmarnock goal was outstanding, or it might have been that Kilmarnock gave as much as they took and didn’t deserve to lose.
McCulloch started his show in the 31st minute with a save from Provan and was a bit unfortunate a minute later when McClair came close with an overhead kick.
Jim Dobbin had started the match in place of the injured Paul McStay and showed great promise with his off-the-ball running and long passes. He got himself into some good shooting positions and was very unfortunate not to give Celtic the lead on a few occasions. Right on half-time he was unlucky when, off balance, he headed a ball straight into the keeper’s arms.
Willie McStay had also started the match in place of McGrain and gave a great first-half performance.
Half-Time Celtic 0-0 Kilmarnock
After 19 minutes of defending by Kilmarnock at the start of the second half, Celtic eventually took the lead. Tommy Burns was pushed in the box and the referee immediately awarded a penalty. Up stepped MacLeod and he made no mistake.
That lead was very short lived. Within a minute, Kilmarnock moved up the field and got a goal back through Gallagher. It was a sign of what the match had developed into when Kilmarnock’s Simpson was booked for wasting time five minutes from the end of play.
