It could all have been tied up so early on but when Celtic pressure failed to pay off, frustration crept into their approach, and in the end the points were shared out.
Henry Smith in the Hearts goal, certainly earned his wages with a ninety minute performance when he was not given the chance to let his concentration slip.
Indeed, he magnificently saved a Murdo MacLeod penalty in the third minute to give Hearts some breathing space and a chance to settle. The foul came when Melrose was sent clear and was tumbled off the ball inside the box by ex-Celt Roddie MacDonald.
Still in the early stages of the match, Cowie viciously brought down Provan just outside the penalty area and he was very lucky only to be booked.
Minutes later Melrose shot wide with only the ‘keeper to beat, then ten minutes before half time Smith had two magnificent save, one from Melrose and the other from MacLeod.
The only goal of the first half, Celtic’s only score of the game, came in the 44th minute and was scored by Frank McGarvey. It was a splendid goal. With his back to goal, he controlled the ball in mid-air and turned to fire it past the helpless Smith, in the Hearts goal.

In the second half, the Hearts ‘keeper was kept busy and continued to pull off top class saves, notably from McAdam, MacLeod and McStay.
The only goal in this half, however, was scored by Jimmy Bone for the visitors in the 49th minute. The Celtic defence was so easily caught out by a forward lob from Alex MacDonald and Bone was to shoot over an advancing Pat Bonner.
A very disappointing day for Celtic when the visitors did not really deserve to finish on level terms. It would be easy to blame the disappointing result on a great goalkeeping performance, but quite simply, Celtic did not have enough shots on target to support the pressure they put on the Hearts defence
