Trivia

  • Celtic stayed in the same hotel in Estoril as they had before the 1967 ECF.
  • Celtic fans complain afterwards of Sporting fans throwing huge lumps of ice at them from food kiosks in the ground.

Review

Celtic could not cope with the lightning pace of the Sporting forwards, particularly Jordao.

They were eventually relieved to leave with only a two goal defecit.

Match Report

This match turned out to be a shocking blow for Celtic and at one stage it looked as if they might go down by more than the two goal margin they now have to overcome in the home second leg next Wednesday.
In the very early stages, Provan worked well to set up a chance for MacLeod, but the midfielder’s shot went wide.
It was Provan, too, who set up another chance midway through the first half with a lobbed cross that was not snapped up.
In the 23rd minute Jordao gave a glimpse of what was to come when he sent a fierce shot only inches past the post.
Two minutes later McAdam came to the rescue when he headed the ball of the line after a corner. In the 27th minute, McGarvey had the ball in the Sporting net after a move that saw no less than five Celtic players touch the ball, the linesman however, had signalled for offside long before McGarvey finished the move.
On the half hour mark, Sporting took the lead. Jordao linked with the other dangerous looking player Olivera. From his cross Jordao got up to head past Bonner.
Half-Time
Sporting Lisbon 0-1 Celtic
Sporting scored again in the second half, and again it was Jordao who fired home. This time after he had out-paced the Celtic defence to reach a long through-ball.
McClair replaced Melrose during play but like so many other Celts he had no luck in front of goal.

From The Celtic View

Strip change of mind.

A last minute change of mind by Celtic’s Portuguese opponents, Sporting Lisbon, meant Celtic could play in the hoops rather than a special yellow strip that had been made especially for the tie.
A confusing message received by John Kelman in Estoril on Monday night and passed to Frank Connor by telephone meant that when Celtic flew out on Tuesday morning they took two full sets of strips – the yellow ones and the hoops.
There is a UEFA ruling that the home side must change if there is any need, but if the clubs can agree on colours to be worn, there is no need for this rule to apply.
So, with the insistence that Celtic wear no green, the home side originally chose to wear their hooped jersey at home and change in Glasgow.
At very short notice, however, they reversed their decision. This meant that a story published, the week before, in The Celtic View, was inaccurate.
One reporter, Chick Young (surprised?), of the Evening Times, found it worthwhile to point out the “Views mistake”. Surely as a “professional journalist”, Mr Young should understand that the publications like the Celtic View has an early copy deadline and are writing on Monday about events that will happen on Wednesday.
In this instance, they had to press before any indication of this change of mind by Sporting Lisbon.
Mr Young, too, must realise that mistakes can be made. After all in Wednesday night’s Times, he reported that “Celtic last night trained on the lush turf of Sporting’s huge bowl of a ground, just a couple of miles down the road from the famous Stadium of Light in which was born the legend of the Lisbon Lions in 1967.”e
We all know that Celtic won the European Cup in The National Stadium in Lisbon.
Indeed Celtic have played in Benfica’s Stadium of Light when they were drawn against them in the second round of the European Cup in season 1969-70.
