Match Report
The unattractive fixtures thrown up by the League Cup are reflected in the attendances of these matches. Seven days after playing against Sporting Lisbon in front of around 40,000 spectators, Celtic ran out in the same stadium to face Airdrie in front of around 5,000 fans.
It seemed, too, that the players found it hard to raise their game and at the end of a dull match in which Celtic never looked in danger or dangerous, there were no goals to show.
Celtic went forward all the time but seldom threatened goal. The Airdrie ‘keeper really only being tested once in the first half when he cut out a cross from McGrain in the tenth minute.
The second half saw only one near thing when McAdam came to Celtic’s rescue and cleared off the line. John Halpin came on as substitute for Melrose at the beginning of the second half.
