Although Celtic beat Motherwell 2-1 at Fir Park, to remain joint leaders of the premier division with Aberdeen, their performance was again mostly lacklustre, leaving their supporters unconvinced that the championship is yet within their grasp. They were, indeed, matched for most of their encounter by a spirited Motherwell side giving no hint of their lowly League position.
Only at the start of the game did Celtic play to form. McStay opened the scoring in 10 minutes with a well-worked goal but frustration set in and the battling Motherwell equalized with a goal from Walker. In the second half the home team appeared more likely to score than Celtic, who breathed more easily when Gardiner, the Motherwell goalkeeper, was adjudged to have pulled down Johnston. McStay converted the penalty.
