Rangers have fought their way back into contention in the race for the premier division championship in splendid style. They played impressively to gain their most satisfying victory of the season by beating their arch rivals, Celtic, 3-0 at Ibrox. Now they find themselves in second place in the league, only three points behind Aberdeen.
Goals from Durrant, Cooper and McMinn gave Rangers the win to end a depressing run in which they had collected only two points out of eight. They were far ahead of their opponents in teamwork, brilliant individualism and confidence. The Celtic manager, David Hay, sadly said: 'The better team won and they showed all through that they wanted to win much more than we did'.

Thus the Celtic slump continues. They experimented with a new defensive system involving three centre backs but this was no more successful than the orthodox formation which has been so severely criticized recently. The defeat leaves Celtic in third position, and they have conceded 10 goals in the last three matches.

It was not the most robust of Old Firm clashes but that the premier division yields to no other in terms of pace and virility was ruefully acknowledged by McGhee, the new Celtic forward, who has been playing with Hamburg. He said about the game: 'The pace surprised me after a spell in West German football – and I had certainly forgotten about tackling like that'.
