An injury crisis forced David Hay to play inexperienced centre half Ronnie Coyle as McGugan, O'Leary, MacLeod, Johnston and Provan were all out injured.
United were awarded a soft penalty at 2-1 and this knocked the stuffing out of Celtic and they were 4-1 down at half time.
In the second half Celtic played better but never looked like clawing back two goals.
