“Whyte's late goal lifts Celtic”

Celtic, despite a perfect start, were left holding a narrow 2-1 lead for the return UEFA Cup match against Borussia Dortmund in West Hermany in two weeks' time. Despite having by far the bulk of the pressure and controlling the game for long periods, only a last-minute goal from Derek Whyte gave them their victory, and kept alive realistic hopes of making it to the second round. With just four minutes on the clock, Billy Walker making his European debut, popped up in the box to finish off a Stark header and put Celtic in front. It was the kind of opening manager Billy NcNeil had been praying for, and three minutes later Celtric almost went further ahead with a McStay drive was deflected by a Bourussia defender, but De Beer in the visitor's goal, got down to scramble the ball clear. Celtic continued to go forwards and were unlucky in 14 minutes when McGhee intercepted a cross from Srtark with Walker in much better position, and the former Aberdeen man's effort slipped harmlessly past. Borussia than began to show for the first time in the match, and after 20 minutes, Mill headed just past McNight's right-hand post. Pagelsdorf and Dickel then set up chances for Borussia before Celtic began to take command again. With McStay in superb form in midfield, Celtic began to dictate the pace again, but despite two McGhee efforts just before half-time – one a header just over the bar, the second a drive past De Beer's right-hand post – the interval arrived with only Walker's early counter separating the sides. Celtic began the second-half where they had left off – going forward looking for the second goal that would make the second leg journey to Dortmund so much easier. After 47 minutes Antony Rogan made his way down the left wing but his shot just scraped the cross-bar. Five minutes later Mark McGhee wriggled free from two defenders in the penalty box, but his low cross found no takes with the goal at the mercy of the onrushing Celtic forwards. And with Celtric failing to drive more their advantage, Borussia began to come more into the game. Raducanu came close after 62 minutes when left with a free header midway inside the penalty area, but he was off target. However, Borussia had to wait just two more minutes to snatch a dramatic equalizer. Roy Aitken, not enjoying one of his better nights, got into terrible trouble on the edge of the penalty box, was dispossessed by Mill, whose ranking shot left McKnight rooted to his goalline. It looked a body blow to Celtic, but they stuck to their task well, and were rewarded with just one minute left. Whyte latched on to a Owen Archdeacon cross, and drove the ball home from close range to give Celtic their 1 goal victory.
