- Paul McStay captains Celtic for the first time after Roy Aitken’s transfer to Newcastle United.
Review
First match following the transfer away of Roy Aitken to Newcastle, a move that didn’t work out both ways in the long-run. In retrospects, to a number the loss of Roy Aitken is seen as the moment/time that the barren years really kicked off. No denying the poor season in 1988/89, but players like Roy Aitken were vital if a turnaround was needed. Roy Aitken still had a lot to give and had been a mainstay for over a decade.
To many in time, McStay was not the captain that Celtic needed. He did his captaincy most often by example on the pitch, but more than that was needed was a very demoralised side on the field.
Losing to Dundee Utd, albeit away wasn’t an easy pill to swallow, but at least showed the work needed to be done, and a further reality check.
