PASSION and sheer hunger can be fierce taskmasters.Celticdisplayed both in abundance and to a level of commitment with whichRangerscould not compete despite their desire for success in the Scottish Cup. It remains the one domestic trophy which eludes Graeme Souness after the Ibrox side's defeat in this fourth-round tie at Parkhead.

Driven on by a cacophony from the terraces,Celticalways held the whip hand in a match in which the club's whole season was at stake. They attacked smartly from midfield despite being outnumbered, and the front trio of Joe Miller, Dariusz Dziekanowski and Tommy Coyne showed pace and judgement, qualities which have recently been missing fromCeltic'sperformances.
Injury has made this a mixed season for Paul Elliott. The former Aston Villa defender has often struggled to maintain his form and fitness but Elliott chose this occasion to have a colossal match. Along with his partner Derek Whyte, Elliott allowed Ally McCoist and Maurice Johnston no space from which to profit. Indeed,Rangershardly managed a single shot on target during the whole match.
There was a confidence, perhaps even the slightest hint of cockiness aboutCeltic. It was surprising given their recent disappointing run which had yielded only two wins since December. But Paul McStay, Peter Grant and Mike Galloway imposed themselves in the middle of the park from an early stage and gripped the game with such purpose it was always likely they would finish on the winning side.
Ironically, the man who gaveCelticvictory has been one of the most maligned performers at Parkhead. Tommy Coyne joined the club last summer from Dundee but had failed to fulfil his promise as a prolific goal-scorer.
As is often the case with crucial goals it was a pretty messy, inconclusive affair. In the final minute of the first half, McStay sprayed a sweet ball to Dziekanowski who in turn fed Miller on the run into theRangers'box. A few steps further, Miller decided to shoot but his attempt also had all the properties of a cross. Chris Woods seemed to have parried the effort, but Coyne slid in beyond theRangers'keeper to bundle the ball over the line with his thigh.
Goals: Coyne (44) 1-0.

Celtic eyes Cup after downing its arch rival
Celtic beat its arch-rival GlasgowRangers1-0 today to remain on course for another Scottish Cup soccer victory. In the English League Cup, holder Nottingham Forest reached the final for the second year running when it drew 0-0 at Coventry in the semi-final second leg.

Forest, who beat Luton in last year's final, won the first leg in Nottingham 2-1 and had always looked in control.

Tommy Coyne put Celtic into the Scottish Cup quarter-finals on the stroke of half-time whenRangersgoalkeeper Chris Woods knocked a low shot from striker Joe Miller straight at his feet.

Celtic missed a chance to make it 2-0 in the last minute when Polish striker Dariusz Dziekanowski hit the ball straight at Woods – the only man he had to beat. The surprise result was a repeat of last season's final when Celtic's sole hope of winning a trophy and a place in Europe depended on victory over its more-fancied neighbor.

Rangers, 11 points clear of Celticin the league and unbeaten in three meetings this season, has not won the cup for 10 years. It had its best opportunity when Mo Johnston was ruled offside after putting the ball in the net.
