Well-drilled Hibs keep Celts at bay (Glasgow Herald)

DISCIPLINED, determined, and maybe a bit dour as well, Hibs earned themselves a valuable point in front of a frustrated Parkhead crowd.
After a characteristically exciting start, Celtic gradually lost their sting and as a result the Edinburgh visitors, who stuck admirably to their well-rehearsed game plan, held the fort fairly comfortably.
As a consequence both teams stay put in the championship race, Celtic in third and Hibs in fourth place. Considering they were without Murdo MacLeod, Graham Mitchell, and Brian Hamilton, Hibs were entitled to be pleased with themselves.
Hibs had to withstand the inevitable opening surge from Celtic. They did so by dint of their own organisation and a goalkeeper in good form. John Burridge, who was 40 on Tuesday, gave no indication of preparing to don the slippers rather than boots, and had two or three good saves, and one brilliant effort.
Tony Cascarino tested him early on with a fine header following a Mark McNally cross, but the big Irish striker perhaps should have done better later on when Charlie Nicholas laid the ball into his path inside the penalty area. Cascarino hit his shot accurately, but not firmly enough to beat the keeper.
Between those efforts Burridge produced a save of genuine class when a great run by Brian O’Neil finished with a pass to Coyne, whose instinctive left-foot volley looked worth a goal. The keeper managed to put up a hand and push the ball over the bar.
Celtic had to make a substitution after 14 minutes when defender Dariusz Wdowczyk had to leave the field after having pulled a muscle.
John Collins came on to play the left-sided midfield role, and the pattern did not change much. Burridge was again at full stretch in halting a Nicholas shot.
Hibs rarely caused bother at the Celtic end, and in fact Mike Galloway caused more alarm than any effort by the Edinburgh team when he played a risky pass back which fortunately finished within reach of Gordon Marshall.
Celtic, after a dreary spell, suddenly sprang back into life with a surging attack which ended in a lucky escape for Hibs. Cascarino had tried a shot which was blocked but when the ball came back he laid it across goal in front of Collins. His well struck drive beat Burridge but was cleared off the line by Pat McGinlay.
Just before the interval Coyne had another good attempt for Celtic, but this time his shot was just too high.
Gary Gillespie lasted only five minutes of the second half after having suffered an ankle knock. He was replaced by Chris Morris but it was Coyne who nearly snatched the goal Celtic sought. His first-time effort from a Galloway pass was deflected for a corner.
In 52 minutes Hibs made their first alteration, Gareth Evans replaceing David Nicholls. Then Burridge once more came to Hibs’ aid with a brave dive to grab the ball as Coyne came racing past Dave Beaumont.
A game that had been free of any excesses suddenly threw up a row on the touchline when Coyne and Micky Weir became tangled, with legs flailing in angry fashion. Referee Gerry Evans showed the yellow card to both players, which seemed a reasonable solution, although Galloway escaped similar treatment when he brought down Mark McGraw shortly afterwards.
With four minutes left Collins missed the best chance of the night after Nicholas had put him through. The former Hibs man had only Burridge to beat but, attempting to steer the ball around hi, succeeded only in hitting it against him.
