Trivia

  • Bonner had lost out as first team choice GK to Gordon Marshall (jnr) who had been signed by Brady at the start of the season. In fact Bonner was out injured anyway at this time with bruised ribs. Other players missing were Mark McNally (thigh), Tony Mowbray (ankle),.
  • Peter Grant, Martin Hayes, Steve Fulton and Charlie Nicholas had been dropped to the Reserves. Cascarino, who was a non-used sub in this game was about to be swapped with Chelsea for Tom Boyd. Dariusz Dziekanowski had just been sold to Bristol City for £250k. Andy Walker was out on loan to Bolton Wanderers which would become a permanent deal in February. John Hewitt had been released from his contract in early January and would be picked up on a free by St. Mirren 2 days after this game.
  • The old Board were firmly into their plans for a new stadium at Cambuslang. However rumours were starting to appear how these plans were built on shaky ground and the media were having a field day, forcing the Board and Terry Cassidy into numerous statements – which did nothing to convince anyone. Terry Cassidy's columns in Celtic View at this time were a hoot. Wouldn't you know it, all the problems at the club were the MEDIA's fault – purely and simply.
  • Gary Gillespie played despite having just buried his father who died on the Wednesday before the game.
  • David Moyes played for Dunfermiline as well as Neale Cooper. Both would go on to management south of the border. Istvan Kozma would leave Dunfermiline for Liverpool at the end of the season.

Review

Satisfactory if unmemorable third successive win at East End Park where the team failed yet again to bury chances and finish off games.

Descibed as another bout of chance-missing-itis in the second half by Celtic View.

Before the interval play had been rather tepid apart from a well taken Tommy Coyne goal, the 99th league strike of his career, which separated the sides.
In truth though Celtic assumed control after opening the scoring and never really surrendered it for the resat of the match.
Celtic boss Liam Brady retained the starting eleven that had earned three points from the two previous away days in the past fortnight.
This featured Gordon Marshall behind a flat back four of full backs Chris Morris and Dariusz Wdowczyk and a central pairing of Derek Whyte and Gary Gillespie.
Brian O'Neil, Paul McStay and John Collins were strung across the midfield whilst Coyne and Gerry Creaney filled the striking roles and Joe Miller was on the right flank.
The home side began more purposefully and, immediately before Celtic went in front, Istvan Kozma squandered a fine chance went sent clear.
Play moved swiftly upfield from Marshall and the Dunfermiline defense got itself into a right fankle on the edge of the box.
A posse of Celts were involved in a scramble before the ball was transferred to Coyne 12 yards out to the left of the goal.
The striker steadied himself before burying his shotlow across Rhodes and into the keeper's bottom left hand corner.
This 23rd minute goal apart, the first half had little to make it memorable.
Not quitw so the second 45. Celtic, looking much more in the mood, proceeded to carve out a series of opportunitoies which failed to give any tangible reward.
As they engineered raid afyter raid on the Pars goal Coyne, Creaney, Collins and Miller all went close when they might have done better.
McStay too got in on the act though his 25 yard drive ehich Rhodesfinger-tipped over could not be faulted. No more could another fine performance by the Celtic captain.
