“Cadete's double destroys Celtic”
The Times (London, England) (Nov 4, 1993)
Sporting Lisbon 2 – Celtic 0
(Sporting win 2-1 on agg)
CELTIC lived to regret the chances they squandered in the first half of their 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon in Glasgow a fortnight ago when they were dismissed from the Uefa Cup second round in Lisbon last night. Two goals from Jorge Cadete, the Portugal forward and Sporting captain, were sufficient to see them off despite a creditable performance in the return leg. Buoyed by their unexpected 2-1 victory over Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday, Celtic opened in a positive mood and Gillespie quickly found himself with a clear view of the target. But although he measured his shot carefully, he drove it narrowly over. The left-flank route was proving fertile for Celtic but just when every omen pointed to an early success for them, they conceded a goal in contentious circumstances. Cadete appeared offside when running clear of the Celtic defenders but was allowed to continue his run before sending in a shot that squirmed under Bonner's diving body. Celtic regained their composure and there was an absence of incident until midway through the second half, when they were wounded in similar fashion. Cadete again looked offside but he ignored the Celtic protests to drive in from close range past the helpless Bonner.
