Cadete steps in to set up Celtic victory
The Scotsman 15/08/1996
Clyde1 Brown (74) Celtic3 Cadete (11, 67), Thom (87)
CELTIC called on their foreign legion to secure their passage into the third round of the Coca-Cola Cup.
Jorge Cadete gave the Parkhead men a two-goal cushion, but they were made to fight in the last quarter of the match after Jim Brown pulled one back for the Second Division side, and it took a late goal from Andreas Thom to ensure victory.
Celtic survived a scare in the opening minute when Miller Mathieson intercepted a Simon Donnelly pass 20 yards from goal, exchanged passes with Eddie Annand, then saw his shot strike the inside of Gordon Marshall's post before John Hughes stepped in to clear. There were a few signs of edginess in the centre of the Celtic defence where Peter Grant and Hughes were paired, but Cadete's opening goal calmed the nerves. Pierre Van Hooijdonk nodded a loose ball into Cadete's path with the Portuguese striker slipping his shot past Mark McLean from close range.
Clyde's quick direct breaks from the centre of the field were causing Celtic concern, but they were grateful to goalkeeper McLean five minutes from the break when he beat away a Donnelly drive from 15 yards.
Celtic captain Paul McStay, who had been nursing an injury, was replaced five minutes into the second half by Brian McLaughlin, who immediately scorned a clear-cut chance to add his second.
Then Clyde had a double chance to create a shock. First Annand found the Celtic defence opening in front of him in 56 minutes, but allowed Marshall to block his shot with his feet. And four minutes later the striker had an almost identical opportunity and yet again ran into the goalkeeper.
Celtic made Clyde pay for those misses when they added a second in 67 minutes. A low cross from the left from Thom was headed in by Cadete.
Just as it looked as if Celtic could relax Clyde set the game alight when they opened their account in 74 minutes. An Andy Gibson corner from the left was headed out by John Hughes and as the ball dropped, Brown volleyed home from 25 yards. With three minutes to go, Thom settled the issue.
