Trivia

  • The signing of Henrik Larsson was delayed whilst the Dutch FA Tribunal delayed a decision on the get-out clause in his contract for a week. Larsson said that he would not play again for Feyenoord and threatened to return to Sweden and play amateur football if the decision went against him.
  • It appeared that some movement had been made to sign Paul Lambert from Borussia Dortmund. The player discussed matters with the press during a return to Scotland and alleged that the only reason he had not been signed already was that Jock Brown did not fancy him (Scotsman, 18/7/97).
  • Celtic were linked to Jamie Fullarton, an ex-St Mirren player who had been playing for Bastia. Marc Rieper of West Ham, Paulo Alves of Sporting Lisbon, Ulrich van Gobbel of Southampton and Karel Poborsky of Manchester Utd. were also said to be in the frame.

St Pat's 1 Celtic 1
KEEPER Trevor Wood was the hero as St Pat's inflicted more misery on Celtic in the Amstel Challenge at Richmond Park.
The Northern Ireland keeper produced a string of fine saves on another dismal night for the Hoops.
Irish youths manager Brian Kerr officially opened the new 2,000-seater stand.
But Celtic destroyed the party mood by taking the lead after just 15 minutes through Simon Donnelly.
But Tommy Gaynor stunned the visitors with an equaliser just three minutes into the second-half.

Jansen can draw little comfort
The Scotsman 19/07/1997

Celtic ended their pre-season tour of Ireland with a disappointing draw against the part-timers of St Patrick's Athletic, giving a performance which must have convinced new coach Wim Jansen that reinforcements are urgently required if the club is to mount a meaningful challenge this season. His new charges took little time to settle and should have taken the lead in the ninth minute.
Andreas Thom, with a powerful run from the halfway line, played a 1-2 with Paolo Di Canio at the edge of the penalty box but saw his shot rebound off the right-hand post. Six minutes later, Celtic did take the lead through Simon Donnelly. Jackie McNamara, unusually running in from the left, saw his shot at goal parried by goalkeeper Trevor Wood into Donnelly's path to allow him to net from eight yards.
Midway through the half, Di Canio should have doubled Celtic's lead but he was crowded out in front of goal after David Hannah had rounded the keeper and picked out the Italian.
St Pats were offering little threat with coach Jansen able to push Hannah forward to join Stuart Gray and Morten Wieghorst in midfield.
Celtic began the second half with Tommy Johnson on in place of Thom, but it was St Pats who drew first blood. A free kick into the box left the Celtic defence flat-footed with Tommy Gaynor, who won a League Cup medal with Nottingham Forest in 1992, sliding the loose ball under Gordon Marshall. Celtic tried to force their way back into the game after the shock of losing a goal but were repeatedly denied by Wood. Twice he thwarted Donnelly whilst in the 62nd minute Di Canio, making perhaps his last appearance for the club, shot wide of an open goal from Johnson's pass.

  • Manager Interview

Wim Jansen, post match:
"The goalkeeper was very good, we could have scored ten goals but for their keeper," he said. "We gave away only one chance and it cost us a goal, but it was not a 1-1 game. We had 15 or 20 chances.
“In our last match against PSV Eindhoven we had fewer chances but scored twice. Sometimes you need to be lucky.
“The goal we lost was a bad one but we are improving.
“It is important to use the same players again and I hope to put out a similar team against Inter CableTel.”

"I think that the whole team played much better than in the last game, maybe we had 15 to 20 chances and it's a pity that we only scored once."
