Dunfermline took the game to Celtic from the kick-off and a Tod header from eight yards was well held by Rab Douglas.
Home goalkeeper Marco Ruitenbeek almost gifted Celtic the lead after five minutes. He mis-kicked a clearance and there were cries for a penalty when he dived at the feet of Sutton for the loose ball.
It was all very tight in midfield and the first corner did not arrive until the 42nd minute.
The closest to a goal came seconds from the break. Scott Thomson's 25-yard drive was pushed for a corner by Douglas at full-stretch.
Celtic should have taken the lead early in the second half. Bobby Petta ran right through the centre of the Dunfermline defence. The left-winger advanced into the penalty box, but his attempted shot was easily mopped up by the relieved and exposed Ruitenbeek.
Celtic made the breakthrough after 65 minutes. A Thompson free-kick from the touchline found Larsson 10 yards out and the Swede rose above Skerla to head home.
Dunfermline were back in it after 82 minutes when Skerla drove the ball home in a crowded goalmouth.
Celtic looked to have clinched it with a superb second goal. Thompson played it into the box. Larsson dummied the ball to Sutton and the Englishman played it back into the path of his striking partner to flick it over Ruitenbeek.
Dunfermline saved the game in the dying seconds when Nicholson's low drive from 20 yards went in off the post.

Dunfermline are proving themselves to be the comeback kings after a late Barry Nicholson goal deservedly forced a replay against Celtic at East End Park.
Celtic took the lead midway through the second-half through Henrik Larsson.
Dunfermline hit back thorugh Andrius Skerla eight minutes from the end only for Larsson to strike again five minutes later.
But the side who struck back from two down to defeat St Johnstone in the last round earned a replay at the death through former Rangers midfielder Nicholson.
Three changes
Celtic were without Johan Mjallby, but Joos Valgaeren returned from injury in his place in defence.
