Review
Goalkeeper Jonathan Gould came into the side for Dmitri Kharine and Johan Mjallby replaced Tom Boyd, who has a testimonial match with Manchester United on Tuesday to look forward to, while youngster Jamie Smith started in the place of suspended Didier Agathe. Dundee were a man short for an hour following the 33rd minute dismissal of defender Zura Khizanishvili. Celtic threw men forward in numbers in the second half but the visitors held firm and could have extended their advantage on the break.
The Dens Park side found themselves under pressure from the first whistle and had to make several telling tackles in defence to prevent themselves from losing an early goal. Henrik Larsson had a glorious chance to break the deadlock in the 27th minute when Del Rio's slip allowed him a clear run through on goal, but his tame effort was saved by Jamie Langfield.
The home crowd were stunned on the half hour when Celtic fell behind to a superb Fabian Caballero goal. Gavin Rae found Beto Carranza on the left flank and he played the ball to Caballero, who cooly turned away from Joos Valgaeren before curling an inch-perfect effort past the left hand of Gould and into the bottom corner.
Celtic were thrown a lifeline three minutes later when Dundee were reduced to 10 men. Khizanishvili attempted to pull down Larsson, but the Swede shrugged him off to fire just wide of the post. Referee Tom Brown pulled play back and brandished the red card.
Despite their reduced personnel, Dundee continued to press forward and doubled their lead two minutes before the break when they capitalised on some poor Celtic defending. Javier Artero found space on the right wing and played the ball across the face of goal and Caballero was the first to react to fire home from close range with Ramon Vega dithering.
O'Neill replaced Vega and Smith at the break with Boyd and Sean Maloney as Celtic went in search of a way back. Maloney was a constant threat and was unfortunate not to reduce the deficit in the 48th minute when he headed Thompson's cross down, but Langfield made a stunning save to deny him. Langfield again produced a great stop a minute later when he dived to his right to save Mjallby's point-blank header from Lennon's free-kick. But the young Dundee goalkeeper almost gifted Celtic a lifeline when he dropped Moravcik's cross in to the path of Maloney, but the youngster drilled his shot over the bar. Langfield made amends two minutes later when Thompson cut the ball back from the by-line into the path of Maloney, but the keeper again denied the substitute.
Dundee could have killed the game in the 65th minute when Rae capitalised on some sloppy defending, but drilled his shot just past the upright. Moments later and Carranza had another chance to sink the champions, but Gould this time was quick off his line to make the vital block. Celtic swarmed forward in the closing stages, but in doing so lost much of their shape and could not break down the stubborn Dundee defence.
