Review
The first half was played with plenty of desire and no little good football on display. Raimond van der Gouw showed why Fabian Barthez is the number one choice at Old Trafford when he spilled a straight-forward Moravcik shot at the feet of Tom Boyd after four minutes.
The man of the evening tried to mark the occasion with an extravagant back-heel, but only succeeded in hitting the ball against himself.
Alan Stubbs misjudged a through ball and Sheringham pounced to hit a vicious 25-yard volley which Rab Douglas did well to tip over. Larsson then released Agathe on the right wing and made up 40 yards to get on the end of the Frenchman's cross, only to see his powerful header come back off the underside of the bar. Celtic had enjoyed the better of the chances, but uncharacteristic slackness at the back cost them a goal in 25 minutes. From the right, Beckham picked out the run of Silvestre who had the simplest of tasks to head past Douglas.
Another fine run by Agathe almost brought about an equaliser – he cut the ball back to Moravcik who flicked it into the path of Larsson, but Phil Neville blocked his effort. United then broke upfield and should have doubled their lead, but Beckham somehow sidefooted wide.
There were changes aplenty as the second half began but the determination from either side did not wane.
Both teams continued to press for goals and Alan Thompson came close in 55 minutes. He showed good awareness to intercept a pass by Nicky Butt and his left foot shot forced Van der Gouw into an athletic save. Larsson was unable to keep the rebound down.
Lennon and Lambert combined well shortly afterwards and it required a good challenge in the box to prevent the former Leicester midfielder from getting a deserved equaliser.
United boss Alex Ferguson gave the Celtic fans something to shout about with 25 minutes left when he replaced Van der Gouw with Andy Goram. The former Rangers goalkeeper's every touch was booed vehemently by the home support.
The match eventually petered out, but with three minutes remaining substitute Bojan Djordjic rounded things off with a delightful second goal for the visitors. Allowed to run free on the left, he feinted to shoot before chipping the stranded Jonathon Gould.
