Review

Celtic had suffered a blow before kick-off, a hamstring injury forcing top scorer Henrik Larsson to stay back in Glasgow. But veteran Slovakian Lubo Moravcik proved an able replacement as the champions elect took early control.
Celtic took the lead when Bobo Balde's through ball allowed Petrov to reach the by-line. The Bulgarian captain's low cross into the six-yard box was scrambled over the line by the Welsh striker.
Hartson and Johan Mjallby both stabbed the ball wide from close range either side of the break.
But Petrov made the tie safe when Moravcik found the Bulgarian breaking into the box and the midfielder chipped the ball over the advancing Kjaer after 53 minutes.
Hartson took some of the shine off Celtic's night by being sent off for a kick at Jamie McAllister after being brought down by the Dons defender after 85 minutes.
Balde was adjudged, wrongly, to have brought down Zerouali in the dying seconds, but Celtic goalkeeper Robert Douglas saved Winters' penalty kick.

Dallas turned in another inept performance with some very strange decisions – booking Agathe for being pulled to the ground by his shirt and shorts, booking Sutton for his first foul tackle and letting an identical Aberdeen tackle go minutes later without even speaking to the Dons player, awarding a penalty against Balde when the player clearly got to the ball first, not allowing treatment for Chris Sutton when he was clearly the victim of a very late challenge by that wee sh** Young, ignoring his linesman's flag when Sutton suffered that late challenge (questioned by Martin O'Neill after the match, the linesman denied that he had put his flag up or that he saw anything wrong.

Celtic ease past Dons

Aberdeen 0-2 Celtic

Celtic joined Old Firm rivals Rangers in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup after a straightforward victory over Aberdeen.

But the holders' night was spoiled slightly by the late sending off of John Hartson and an injury to Chris Sutton.

Goals from Hartson and Stilian Petrov early in each half ensured that Martin O'Neill's side gained revenge for their single league defeat of the season.

O'Neill and his players were angered by the strength of Aberdeen's celebrations following that 2-0 reverse at Pittodrie in December.

John Hartson misses a chance to extend Celtic's lead

But it rarely looked like Ebbe Skovdahl's on-form side would win the opportunity for a repeat showing on Monday night as Celtic cruised to only their second win in seven visits to Pittodrie in the Scottish Cup.

Celtic had suffered a blow before kick-off, a hamstring injury forcing top scorer Henrik Larsson to stay back in Glasgow.

But veteran Slovakian Lubo Moravcik proved an able replacement as the Scottish champions elect took early control.

Aberdeen were forced to make one change from the side that crushed Dundee United last week, with Darren Young coming in for the injured Cato Guntveit.

Both sides started at a furious pace and had created chances at both ends before Hartson gave Celtic the lead after six minutes.

Petrov was through on Peter Kjaer but took the ball too wide of the goalkeeper.

A powerful low drive by Robbie Winters flew the wrong side of the Celtic side-netting.

But it was Celtic who took the lead when Bobo Balde's through ball allowed Petrov to reach the by-line.

The Bulgarian captain's low cross into the six-yard box was scrambled over the line by the Welsh striker.

Aberdeen suffered a blow when midfielder Derek Young was forced to leave the field in the 34th minute to be replaced by Moroccan international Hicham Zerouali.

Sutton, the striker operating in defence, was substituted soon after through injury.

Balde hauled down Zerouali in the dying seconds, but Celtic goalkeeper Robert Douglas saved Winters' penalty kick.

Aberdeen: Kjaer, McNaughton, McGuire, Whyte, McAllister, Mackie, Darren Young, Bisconti, Winters, Derek Young, Dadi. Subs: Esson, Anderson, Zerouali, Clark, Tiernan.

Celtic: Douglas, Balde, Mjallby, Sutton, Agathe, Lambert, Lennon, Petrov, Thompson, Moravcik, Hartson. Subs: Gould, Boyd, Maloney, Smith, Crainey.

Celtic won out fairly comfortably in a bruising encounter which saw Moravcik, Mjallby and Sutton all taking knocks and Hartson getting a red card for lashing out at McAllister after he was pulled down.

The match roared into life with Petrov bursting forward in the first minute and heading for the Aberdeen box. His touch let him down and he moved wide. In his attempt to bring a team mate into play he gave it away. Aberdeen burst forward in turn and a great ball from right to left found Winters inside the box. He controlled the ball well but shot wide.

Bisconte had another weak attempt which Douglas dealt with comfortably and in 4 minutes a long ball through to Hartson saw him stretch to put it wide. The first goal quickly followed as Balde played a nice ball down the right for Petrov. Stan crossed at the bye-line and the ball went through Whyte's legs. Hartson moved in front of the defender to knock the ball home.

Aberdeen had a half chance when the ball fell to Dadi as a corner was not cleared but he shot wide. Sutton was yellow carded for a late tackle on Derek Young and from the resulting free kick Robbie Winters put it round the wall but Douglas coped easily.

Dadi had another difficult header at the near post from a corner which went wide and 2 minutes later Petrov had a headed chance from a Mjallby cross but put it well wide.

Another great chance fell to John Hartson on 42 minutes as a long ball beat the offside trap but he failed to hit the target.

The second half was 2 minutes old when Hartson broke into the box on the right. His snap shot from a narrow angle was held by the keeper. Mjallby got on the end of a Moravcik centre on 50 minutes but couldn't direct it on target.

In 52 minutes Moravcik picked up the ball on the left. He turned, made space and put through a beautiful ball into the box for the onrushing Petrov. Stan's accomplished finish, chipping it over the keeper put Celtic 2-0 up.

From this point on Celtic never looked like losing but the players on both sides were fully committed and there were a lot of tough tackles

Didier Agathe was booked for diving when his jersey was clearly being pulled.

In 85 minutes Hartson's stupid lunge got him sent off.

In the third minute of injury time Balde needlessly brought down Zerouali. Winters spot kick was saved by Douglas as the Celtic keeper dived correctly to his left.
