Celtic threatened after 10 minutes, a low cross across the face of goal from Didier Agathe finding no takers.
Pars goalkeeper Marco Ruitenbeek was eventually called into the action five minutes later, turning a dipping 25-yard drive from Larsson over the bar.
Celtic took the lead after 25 minutes. Petrov played the ball into the path of Larsson and the Swede, who had lost marker Scott Wilson, placed the ball wide of Ruitenbeek from 12 yards.
Celtic gained in confidence and their gradual stranglehold on possession told after 32 minutes when Thompson powered a curling drive with his left foot into the far corner of the net from 18 yards.
Sutton should have made it three when he beat Dunfermline's offside trap but shot wide of the far post with only Ruitenbeek to beat.
Dunfermline were back in the match after 56 minutes when Gould failed to command his six-yard box. Thomson's high ball into a crowded goalmouth found the net when it was met by Brewster's head.
Dunfermline went all out for the equaliser but gifted Celtic a third when Thomson failed to cut out a Larsson pass and Petrov side footed past the exposed Ruitenbeek.
