Larsson was inches away from connecting with a near-post cross after just four minutes before Hartson tried his luck with a cute chip from 18 yards.
Larsson saw Bayern skipper Oliver Kahn parry his raking free kick away to safety, then the free-scoring Swede left three lunging defenders in his wake before warming the hands of Kahn with a fierce shot.
Celtic were given a scare after 25 minutes when Michael Ballack let rip with a long range shot that Magnus Hedman did well to tip over the crossbar.
Kahn spilled a high ball under pressure from Hartson but Stilian Petrov’s follow-up shot was blocked by a forest of German legs.
Celtic were dealt a double blow after an hour when Didier Agathe limped off with an injury, and Thompson picked up a booking that sees him ruled out of the last Group A match in Lyon.
Hartson bundled his way through a series of challenges before getting squeezed out by a combination of Kahn and two defenders, and from the resulting corner Sutton’s header found the side-netting.

It marks the first time in six games that Martin O’Neill’s side has failed to collect maximum points at home in the tournament and leaves Group A finely poised going into the last round of matches.
Celtic now join Lyon and Anderlecht on seven points, while Bayern sit on six – with Celtic travelling to France on 10 December.
The home side adopted the same high-tempo approach that has been so successful in previous European games.
But they found the German giants difficult to break down and were limited to a handful of half-chances.
Celtic started brightly, with strikers Henrik Larsson and John Hartson troubling the visiting defence and Chris Sutton playing in an advanced central midfield role.

With 38 minutes gone, Hartson rose highest in a congested penalty area to meet Thompson’s corner but Owen Hargreaves was on the post to clear for Bayern.
In a rare attack, Roque Santa Cruz got in behind the Celtic defence but Hedman was quick off his line to make a vital block at the on-rushing Paraguayan’s feet and gather the ball at the second attempt.
Bayern started the second half sitting very deep in their own half and Celtic found it difficult to make any inroads near the visitors’ penalty box.
