Pearson, who left Motherwell in January, almost put Beattie through in the sixth minute but home keeper Barry John Corr raced off his line to boot the ball clear. Ross Wallace was teasing the Motherwell defence on the left flank and his deep cross was inviting team-mates to attack it but Jamie Smith could not make a telling connection.
A dull game suddenly sparked to life and Motherwell snatched the lead in the 64th minute through Clarkson, despite a suspicion of offside. Burns ran onto Paul Quinn's through-ball and, as the Celtic defence stood expecting the flag to go up, he played the ball across goal for the youngster to steer the ball home.
Aiden McGeady immediately tried to hit back and Corr pushed his long-range effort around the post before holding the subsequent awkward corner at the near post.
Celtic drew level when Beattie peeled off his markers to arrive at the near post first and head home Smith's corner.

Motherwell picked up their first point since the SPL split thanks to a spirited draw against an inexperienced Celtic side at Fir Park.
A miserable first half saw neither goalkeeper seriously involved but the second 45 minutes provided better fare.
Teenager David Clarkson shot the home side ahead when he ran on to a clever Alex Burns pass.
But the callow Celts fought back gamely and Craig Beattie grabbed his first SPL goal with a 79th minute header.

Scott McDonald thought he had given the home side the lead after 17 minutes when he headed the ball home from close range, after Clarkson had flicked Stephen Craigan's cross over the head of David Marshall, but the linesman was flagging for offside.
The home side strung a neat move together in the 24th minute when McDonald picked Alex Burns out in the area but Stephen McManus did well to block the striker's shot.
