Celtic striker Chris Sutton scored twice as the league champions cruised to a comfortable victory at Tannadice.
Sutton nodded in a simple goal from a corner on 10 minutes and tucked away a penalty after Henri Camara had been upended by goalkeeper Paul Jarvie.
Stilian Petrov finished a flowing move in between Sutton's first-half double, while Juninho missed an open goal.
United were denied two strong penalty claims but were no match for Celtic, who strolled through the second half.
United looked lively in the early stages and Barry Robson produced the first effort on goal when he whistled a fierce free-kick just past David Marshall's upright.
But Celtic went ahead when Sutton eluded his marker to glance Petrov's corner into the corner of the net.
United striker Jim McIntyre went down in the penalty area after a clumsy barge from Bobo Balde but referee Hugh Dallas waved away the protests.
With 17 minutes gone Celtic doubled their advantage after good work from John Hartson and Camara.
They combined to find the overlapping Petrov on the right and he fired a right-foot shot across Paul Jarvie and into the opposite corner of the net.
Moments later the home fans were furious again when Joos Valgaeren appeared to bring Stuart Duff down in the box but Dallas again showed no interest.
Celtic were picking holes in the United defence and Stanislav Varga fired over from only six yards before Juninho was guilty of missing the simplest of chances.
Jarvie blocked Camara's low shot and the ball broke to the Brazilian to side-foot into an open goal but he somehow hit the side-netting from five yards.
Jarvie did well to stop a Hartson effort from close range and Varga crashed a ferocious 20-yard shot over the crossbar.
Camara earned his side a penalty in the 36th minute when he nudged the ball ahead of Jarvie and was sent sprawling. Sutton fired the spot-kick home.
With the contest effectively over by the interval, the second half saw Celtic content to keep possession for long spells.
United put up a better fight in midfield and were winning their fair share of tackles but seldom threatened Marshall's goal.
Petrov was given a glimpse of goal in the 78th minute after a neat flick from Sutton but the Bulgarian slashed the ball high and wide from 15 yards.
James Grady stole in behind the Celtic defence in the 89th minute but his weak shot straight at Marshall rather summed up a miserable afternoon for the hosts.
