Review

Dundee looked the marginally more threatening side in a dull opening period, with Robb lively on the left flank. Camara was given a glimpse of goal in the 23rd minute after a good break from midfield by Pearson but Dundee keeper Derek Soutar was able to block the striker's shot. Five minutes later, McGeady left McDonald for dead with some trickery and flashed in a low cross that Jonay Hernandez did well to scoop over his own crossbar from three yards out.

Celtic were growing as an attacking menace but it was Dundee who went ahead 10 minutes before the interval.

Lovell raced in behind the Celtic defence to gather a Mark Fotheringham pass and, with goalkeeper Magnus Hedman going to ground early, the striker was able to slip a low, angled shot in off the post. John Hartson replied immediately with a shot on the turn that flew just wide, while Joos Valgaeren volleyed over the bar and Stilian Petrov was denied by a good save from Soutar.

Celtic were level after 53 minutes, following good work from the impressive Pearson down the left wing, he cut the ball across the penalty box for Petrov, who saw his shot stopped by Soutar but the ball fell to Hartson and his scuffed effort was helped in from close range by Camara.

Hartson had a header ruled out for offside but soon got his name on the scoresheet, after McGeady had set him up.

The Irish youngster skipped through the Dundee defence and rolled the ball to his Welsh team-mate, who had a simple finish from six yards.

After 76 minutes Lovell chased down a long ball and when Hedman slid out to meet him the ball spun loose and the former Portsmouth man was able to find the net with a clever lob from a wide angle.

Dundee 2-2 Celtic

BBC
Two goals from Steve Lovell helped hold Celtic at Dens Park and lift Dundee off the foot of the SPL table.

Lovell fired Dundee into a surprise lead after 35 minutes when he finished well from an acute angle.

But Henri Camara equalised from close range early in the second half and John Hartson scored his 15th goal of the season with a tap-in soon after.

Fourteen minutes from time, Lovell grabbed his second goal with a cute lob and Dundee held on to secure a point.

Despite Chris Sutton and Alan Thompson missing out through suspension, there was no place in the Celtic starting line-up for summer signing Juninho.

Manager Martin O'Neill preferred to add Aiden McGeady and Stephen Pearson to his midfield.

The home side made four changes to the side that lost 4-1 to Hibs last weekend, with Steven Robb, Calum McDonald, Iain Anderson and Alex Cerdeira all coming in.

Dundee were first to threaten in the second half, when a 20 yard shot from Cerdeira whistled high and wide and ex-Celt Fotheringham ended a great run from the halfway line with an effort that missed the target by inches.

Lovell had a penalty claim turned down when he was caught between Bobo Balde and Didier Agathe and the same player was penalised for a raised boot before blasting the ball past Hedman.

But the pacey striker was not to be denied and his endeavour was rewarded after 76 minutes.

Lovell chased down a long ball and when Hedman slid out to meet him the ball spun loose and the former Portsmouth man was able to find the net with a clever lob from a wide angle.

Steven McNally was able to boot clear from under his own crossbar after Hartson had headed across goal and Camara was denied by a Hernandez block as Dundee earned a valuable point.

O'Neill praise for tired Celtic

BBC
Dundee 2-2 Celtic
Celtic boss Martin O'Neill praised his side after the draw in Dundee that saw them knocked off the top of the league.

"We had four or five wonderful chances, on top of the two goals we got, to finish off the game," said O'Neill.

"There were a lot of tired legs after Barcelona, so I'm pleased with the effort of the players.

"We did really well to come back from a goal behind to get in front and we could have got the winner at the end, which I think we would have deserved."
