Review

Celtic almost took the lead when Alan Archibald nodded a Chris Sutton header off the line after an Aiden McGeady corner. Bullock produced an impressive point-blank stop from Stilian Petrov. Mark Wilson was next to clear off the line from Petrov.

Celtic eventually made the breakthrough when Thompson picked out Sutton with his corner and the striker left Bullock with no chance with a header from six yards.

Bullock prevented a second goal when he somehow managed to turn Bobo Balde's header over the crossbar from a McGeady free-kick. A powerful volley from John Hartson flew just over the crossbar and Bullock's legs denied the striker when he next found the target.

Thompson limped off after 37 minutes and was replaced by Juninho.

Celtic suffered a second blow when Joos Valgaeren was stretchered off shortly after the break, being replaced with Ulrik Laursen.

Juninho came close for Celtic with an attempted long-range chip over Bullock. Sutton was next to loft the ball over the goalkeeper but found the top of the net.

Celtic 1-0 Dundee United

BBC
Chris Sutton grabbed the winner as stuttering Celtic edged into a four-point lead over inactive Rangers in the Scottish title race.

Celtic had two early efforts cleared off the line and United goalkeeper Tony Bullock pulled off several fine saves.

Sutton, as he had last week against Dunfermline, eventually rose to head home an Alan Thompson corner.

But goalkeeper Magnus Hedman produced good saves to prevent Mark Kerr and Barry Robson scoring an equaliser.

United had enjoyed a lot of possession in the early minutes of the game, but they could not make it count.

United took advantage and Magnus Hedman produced two excellent saves to thwart efforts from Kerr and Robson, who had attempted to score direct from a corner.

Juninho came close for Celtic with an attempted long-range chip over Bullock.

Sutton was next to loft the ball over the goalkeeper but found the top of the net.

Bullock again came to United's rescue when he managed to block a Petrov free-kick that had sliced through the wall.

United substitute Jason Scotland went down in the box under pressure from Balde, but referee Charlie Richmond rejected the penalty claim.

The United players claimed Hartson had handled in the area with seconds remaining, but the official once again ignored the claim.

Valgaeren injury worries O'Neill

BBC
Celtic 1-0 Dundee United
Celtic manager Martin O'Neill is hopeful of having one of two players injured against Dundee United available to face Hearts on Boxing Day.

"Alan Thompson I'm hoping wouldn't be too bad, but Joos Valgaeren is definitely a concern for us at this minute," he said.

"We have a very difficult game coming up on Boxing Day before we even look to the new year.

"We played well in patches against United, but I am just happy to win it."
